Day 1: The Sites

Listen, we prefer the true local experiences of Rio de Janeiro. That’s what makes it the city we call home. That being said, there are just some things in life that you need to see. The Christ the Redeemer statue and the Sugar Loaf mountain are on that list. Spend your first day in the city exploring one of the 7 wonders of the world and the landmarks that have come to define the Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City).

Touristy Day

Step by Step Checklist:

  • Start with the early morning Christ the Redeemer Visit by Train
  • Head over to Praça Mauá – Porto Maravilha Project
  • Hop on the new VLT to Cinelândia Station, the historical center of Rio
    • If you choose to walk make sure to stop at Candelária Church, Praça XV, & Largo da Carioca)
  • Take the Bonde (Trolley) over the Arches of Lapa to Santa Teresa.
    • Stop and have lunch at any of the charming restaurants in Largo dos Guimarães, you can’t go wrong)
  • Walk through the Santa Teresa neighborhood and down the Escadaria Selarón
  • Finally get on over to the Sugarloaf for the best sunset view in the city!

Day 2: The Nature

There is no metropolitan city in the world that boasts the natural beauty of Rio de Janeiro. Period. On the weekends locals begin their day with a hike or bike ride into the national park and spend the afternoon soaking in the sun sipping a coconut water on the beach. These are a few of the benefits of living in a city smack dab in the middle of a tropical paradise. Now go and see some of this beauty firsthand.

Step by step Checklist:

Waterfalls & Hike 

  • Start your adventure by driving to the Tijuca National Park, the biggest urban forrest in the world!
  • Make a stop at the Taunay Waterfall, Rio de Janeiro’s tallest waterfall.
  • Now tie up those laces and Hike Pedra Bonita trail (shorter) or Pico da Tijuca trail (longer)
  • After the amazing view make you way down to another stunning viewpoint at Vista Chinesa
  • The climax of the day comes with a dip in Cachoeira do Horto!
  • On the way back stop in Jardim Botânico neighborhood for Lunch at Borogodó Restaurant (or any of the other great options!)

West Zone Beaches

  • Head as far west as the city of Rio will take you to a neighborhood called Barra de Guaratiba.
  • Now CHOOSE your preferred option:
    • Visit the Robert Burle Marx Garden Museum – Brazil most famous landscape architects personal gardens and residence.
    • Hike Telégrafo Rock Trail and enjoy the most stunning view in the whole city
    • Rent Stand Up Paddle Board and enjoy some hours discovering the river tributaries and river banks!
  • After the activity make you way to Rio’s favorite beach, Grumari. It is hard to beat this one.
  • Once you’ve soaked up some rays and dove into the waves go and have Lunch at Mirante da Prainha Restaurant

Day 3: The People

This day is about stepping out of our own lives and placing ourselves into the lives of others. Come explore Vidigal, one of Rio de Janeiro’s hillside communities (favelas), which overlooks the famous and glamorous Ipanema beach and boasts one of the most stunning views of the city. Interact with locals and listen to the survival stories of the community and its history; see firsthand the social projects, street art, and small businesses that continue to push this community forward. Most importantly, take the time to reflect. Rio de Janeiro is a city of beautiful contrasts. This experience may well be your favorite.

Step by step Checklist:

Favela Experience

  • Follow the oceanside road to the base of Vidigal Favela
  • Get your adrenaline fix by taking a motorcycle taxi (or van) up the community streets
    • This thrill ride, although common for the locals, is something you will want to do again and again.
  • Stop at Sitié Agro-Ecological Park – an Urban Social Project with an amazing story
  • After your visit walk up to the Parque Olímpica
  • Here those of you who are looking for a sweat and an amazing view, start hiking up to the top of the Dois Irmãos, you won’t regret it!
  • On the way down, take a breather at Dona Ana’s Açai shop and hear about her story
  • Go on over to Bar da Laje and Hotel Avraão, the new up and coming part of the neighborhood for a bite to eat!
  • Head down through the small streets, notice how the locals live, get a feel for Rio’s real side.
  • Walk past the main street art plaza back to the base of the community.
  • When you get back to where you are staying try and reflect on the day and notice how close 3 drastically different realities live right next to one another.

Day 4: The Culture

Now that you’ve seen the sites, seen the nature, and seen the contrasts and lifestyles that make Rio, well, Rio. Now it is time to indulge. Go get to know the charmingly casual Carioca lifestyle by cruising through most well known neighborhoods, Ipanema and Copacabana. Carioca’s enjoy being in the street, interacting with their neighbors, having a drink here and having a bite there. So put on some summer wear and some sandals, bring your appetites for food and drink, and make your way through these iconic areas that have put Rio de Janeiro on the map.
